THE BACK STAIRS

There is a long thin secret back staircase leading down into the kitchen from the second floor hall. It twists and creeps down into a dark tunnel. It's an old servant's staircase. No one likes it. -I do, but no one else does. The kitchen door to it is kept shut and no one ever uses it. Many guests that have come to the hotel describe the old curled staircase as "very creepy." It is the one area of the hotel that feels consistently "negative" to most visitors. One woman under hypnosis even claimed someone had been hung in the back stairwell. But there is absolutely no proof of this ever happening, or not happening.

There is a rocking chair at the top of these back stairs. Ghosty Girl the cat likes to sit in it and rock back and forth.

To this day no one still likes to use these stairs.

I’m a paranormal investigator, psychologist, and speaker on the paranormal. I can’t say for sure that ghosts are real but if they are the Grand Midway has at least three conscious ghosts.

Let’s assume ghosts are real for a minute...after Kerouac Fest 05’ at the Grand Midway Hotel our host Blair took me around the house to see the ghosts. There is one mean one that hangs around the back stairs going from the kitchen to the second floor. I think he can also go up to the third floor at the back of the building.

This man is tall and has a long black beard. He seems to be very good at projecting a feeling of fear. Most people report feeling uneasy about the back stairs and don’t use them. After I left the hotel that night he reportedly shoved some chairs around in the kitchen.
